Safety Tips while Decorating for the Holidays

Posted on 11-22-2016

Children love to take a family ride to see the beautiful lights and decorations during the holidays. From Rooftop Santas to musical lights, there is always something to amaze us during the holiday season. If you enjoy creating your own light show, the National Safety Council has compiled an excellent list of safety precautions to consider. Proper safety steps can make the difference between avoiding unwanted challenges and enjoying the beautiful smiles and fun that the holidays can bring.

To help ensure a safe holiday season, here are a few safety tips from the National Safety Council to consider as you decorate your home.

  • Be careful with small children when you have mistletoe, holly berries, Jerusalem cherry, and amaryllis. Small children may think they can eat holiday plants, but many plants can be poisonous or cause severe stomach problems.
  • Place your breakable tree ornaments or ones with small, detachable parts on higher tree branches where small children or pets can’t reach them.
  • Be sure to turn off your lights on trees, decoration, and the ones outside when you go to bed. Unplug extension cords when not in use and turn everything off when you leave the house.
  • Don’t use chairs or furniture as a ladder. When putting up holiday decorations, always use the proper step stool or ladder to reach high places.
  • When you climb using a ladder, always face the ladder and grip the rungs to climb, not the side rails. Keep three points of contact on the ladder, whether two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand.
  • Place your tree away from fireplaces, radiators, and other heat sources. Make sure the tree does not block foot traffic or doorways.

There are so many things going on during the holidays, and we only want you to be safe!
