Language Learning with Music for Children

Posted on 12-02-2016

Learning a language is so difficult, especially when it’s your first one! Do you remember when you had to learn a language in school? So tough. Children have this same difficulty, so there must be a solution, right?

Music may just be that solution. When learning a new language with music, it becomes easier to synthesize the vocabulary, the grammar, and the tone of the new words.

Research by Parlakian and Lerner states,

“Like all the best learning experiences in early childhood, music activities simultaneously promote development in multiple domains. Singing a lullaby while rocking a baby stimulates early language development, promotes attachment, and supports an infant’s growing spatial awareness as the child experiences her body moving in space. Being intentional about integrating music into your program’s daily routines—thinking through, ‘What do I want the children to learn from this music experience?’—helps you design and choose activities to support specific developmental goals.”

Children learned their ABCs this way, so why not do it with words? The songs are easy to memorize, and they may even get stuck in their little heads!

The next time you sit down to teach your child a lesson, try setting it to your favorite tune. They’ll learn more quickly and have more fun—and, hey, you might enjoy yourself too!
