How to Set Goals with Children

Posted on 02-02-2017

With the start of 2017 comes the chance to think big, refocus, and set new goals. Did you know that teaching your little one to set their own goals could improve their self-esteem, academic performance, and equip them with the tools to persevere throughout their lives? Here is how you can teach your preschooler how to set goals for 2017 and, most importantly, how to stick to them.

Why is it important to set goals?

Setting goals creates motivation, provides accountability, and helps one establish a clear vision and focus for what they want to achieve. However, goal setting is equally important for children. It gives them confidence, creates a sense of purpose, and improves self-awareness. Before helping your child set a specific goal, explain the significance behind it to them. Encourage them to reflect on their past achievements and potential areas to work on, whether it’s improving in school or nurturing friendships and family relationships.

Set an example

Your little ones adore you, look up to you, and want to be just like you. A key step in teaching your children about creating goals is to set an example for them to follow. Set a goal, share your plans to succeed, and actively pursue that goal in front of your children. Watching you persevere and, eventually, succeed will encourage your children to do the same.

Help your child set specific, reachable, and relevant goals

Long-term goals can seem distant and unreachable to a young child, causing them to give up before they even begin. This is why it’s important to help your child set realistic, reachable goals. Each time they achieve a goal, they will be eager to set and complete the next one. Some great examples of reachable goals are:

  • I will clean my room each night before I go to bed.
  • I will learn to ride a bike without training wheels this summer.
  • I will practice reading for 15 minutes before dinner .
  • I will work on sharing toys with my siblings and friends.

Take our tips and help your child establish reachable goals in 2017. With you by their side keeping them motivated and inspired, they are sure to succeed in whatever they strive for!
